Necklaces...organic vibe

These new necklace designs are finally brought to life after rattling around in my brain for a few years.  They are organic and interesting.  Each design is one of a kind like the spots on a giraffe or bubbles drawn together.

bubbles

In editing these photos I hit a random button that made my background this vibrant blue.  The silver popped!

A funny story yesterday as I was making dinner.  In a serious and pleasant voice, my son (7) asked which I thought was harder being a kid and going to school all day and then coming home to do homework or being a parent?  I asked what he thought.  He said he has it harder because it does not look too hard when I fold laundry and watch TV.  Oh, he got me.  My secret is out.  I told him my job is pretty easy because he and his sister are good kids.

Precious Metal Clay ~ Making a chain

PMC Pendant

I made the chain by hammering sterling silver, drilling holes at each end and attaching the jump rings.  The chain links are textured and oxidized.  The pendant was fired with a handheld torch for 7 minutes.  The pendant is thick and heavy giving the necklace a nice weight.  Heavy enough to not slide off center and light enough to wear everyday.

Flower on Opposite Side

I've been doing some research about jewelry photography and read a tip from a jewelry show judge that you should never include the clasp in your photo.  Not sure I agree.  Maybe this is best for publication.  As a customer, I want to see what I am buying and as a seller, I'd like all the details to be up front for a customer.

My goal is to enter my PMC jewelry into some competitions and book projects.   My next pieces will be layered and three dimensional.

These photos are a bit darker than I'd like.  I had time in the morning to take photos and did not want to run around the house to find the right spot of sun.  My natural light photography should improve soon.  This weekend I'm headed to a photography class in Washington, D.C.   I expect to learn many things that will help with my business. I'll post more detail about my class on Wednesday.

This necklace is a teaser, because I am keeping it for myself.  Sorry!  I will make another someday.  In the meantime I'm ready to make some noise and hammer my silver.  Everybody is at school and work so I'm free to experiment.

Simple and Pretty ~ Silver ~

Butterfly and poetry.
Precious Metal Clay.
Garnet.

Long charm holder.
Precious Metal Clay.
Textures.
Oxidized sterling silver.
Purple Czech crystals.

One of the funnest parts about creating jewelry is the actual crafting including pounding silver with multiple hammers on a steel block, melting silver until it balls up and firing silver clay to a bright orange glow with a hand held torch.  All therapeutic. Once I was making a collection of hammered silver necklaces and my neighbor walked by and heard all the pounding.  Later she told me she thought I was getting my kitchen remodeled (I wish!)  My kids often yell, "mom, you are too loud!"

The jewelry in these three photos are the products of what I love to do with silver.  With manipulation it transforms into something pretty to wear.  Sometimes I have a plan, but often I create as I pound, bend, and melt.

This summer I purchased a real jewelers tool (real, as in real necessary) called a flexshaft after I nearly took off a finger with a handheld rotary tool.  Have I used it yet?  No. Waiting for a day to myself to bring out the big guns.  The kids will be in school soon enough.  The flexshaft is powered by a foot pedal, like a swing machine, and looks a lot like the machine the ladies use when you get your nails done.  My flexshaft came with a how-to DVD and beginners kit of attachments.

I found my rotary tool kit at Costco.  It was a helpful beginners tool. One year, I held it up to my husband and said this is all I want for Christmas.  He said, "really?"  I assume he could not believe his luck.  For years I handed him the little blue Tiffany catalog and said "all I want for Christmas (birthday, Valentines Day, anniversary and Mother's Day) can be found here, and I circled my favorites."

On my blog I will also explore jewelry photography.  Jewelry photography has been a challenge for me.  As you can see I played with a brick and marble round.  This weathered marble is my favorite.  I dug it out of the garden this week and washed it off.  I've been hauling it around for 10 years.  Antiquing one day near Middleburg, Virginia, my mother saw two marble rounds and said that I should buy them because they may be useful someday.   Thanks, mom!  Both the marble and brick give the photo a nice texture and keep the jewelry from washing out.  My photographs on white turns the jewelry dull or washed out and the black shows every single piece of lint.

Funny story:  My kids got to meet their teachers today and see their classrooms.  I put on a simple skirt and my daughters exclaimed "mom, you have not dressed up since your twenties! Let me get you some high heels!"  No thanks, flip flops will do.

I will post my favorite tools someday and keep posting about jewelry photography as I learn more.

Have a good one!

Happy Buddha ~ Vacation inspirations

Happy Budda Necklace.  Fall 2010.
Fat and Happy.
Me and the kids on vacation.
Beads I picked up on vacation.
Colors inspired by the river, rocks and mountains.

Happy Budda and two little happy Buddas.   This was my kids and I on vacation.   I like to say "fat and happy."  Isn't that what vacations are for?

When I travel I like to pop into local bead stores and see what they have that is different.  While these Buddas were not made in Idaho, they did strike a cord with me that particular day.

My Fall 2010 collection is going to be a nice mix of chunky colors like the Buddas, simple silver, and triple strand gems with handcrafted fine silver.   My jewelry for Fall 2010 will be available at local shows, home shows and Etsy.

Since we moved to the Norther Virginia area last year I've been family focused and my jewelry took a smaller role.  This year my youngest child will enter all-day Kindergarden (yipee!) so I will now have the time to make my sales calls to local boutiques.

My Etsy customers want to know where I went.   This summer, I have been beautifully busy with custom orders in fine silver.  Etsy is a wonderful site, except it is time consuming to create, take multiple photos, edit and post.  To make Etsy work for your home business you have to work it like a job.  As I get my Etsy site restocked and refocused I will post some how-to blogs.

Rope swinging ~ Catch the feeling.

Me.  Happy, happy, happy!
Idaho on the Salmon River
Love his sweet cheeks.
Little athlete.  Reminds me of a Nike ad.  We had to yell "drop!"
Brave 5 year old.
She got braver when the camera came into play.

Rope swinging in Idaho is one of my most favorite activities to do on vacation.  As a stay-home-busy-as-heck-mother, it is fun to let loose sometimes.  My brother, his family and my kids had a great time on the swing.  My 11-year old niece took this great photo of me on the rope swing one evening.  I warned them to watch out, I'm going to mug for the camera.  She caught it.   We all took turns trying to get that fun mid-air action shot.

Jewelry inspirations.
New to my collection Fall 2010.
This exhilaration you see in the photo is what I feel when I watch my kids do well in life, school and sports.  It is also a good, external, example of how I feel inside when I make jewelry and get a piece just right.  Goosebumps.

Hearts - Vacation Inspirations

My daughter's heart collection from our beach on the Salmon River in Lucile, Idaho.
She wanted to pack them in our luggage to go home.

Hearts.
I have to confess...I like hearts and use them often in my jewelry designs.
This little precious metal clay heart reminds me of my daughter's rock heart design.
 Garnet and pearl.
Celtic knot.  Choker necklace new to my collection.
Not a heart,  however I "heart" this necklace and had to share.
Pearl, ruby, green gem

For several years my sister-in-law and I have started to search for heart shaped rocks on vacation after I read an article about a woman who did the same at her magnificent beach house.  My daughter loves this beach time activity.  One problem, on this vacation we flew home.

As we were packing to go home my daughter shouted "don't forget my rock collection!" I paused and thought about my best option.  I asked her to line them up on the deck and I'd take a picture.  My mother promised to use them in her garden as decorations and she can add to the collection when we visit.  As we left, she picked her favorite rock and brought it home to give to Daddy as a vacation keepsake.  So generous.

I use hearts often in my jewelry designs.   In the past, friends as asked me about the hearts and I told them that I only use hearts because they sell well and certain customers really like hearts.  Over time I realized the truth, I really like hearts because there are so many things to love...life, God, husband, children, family, friends, humor, work...I love hearts.
